The conflict between Iran and the United States is not one war but a seven-decade confrontation that has run through coups, revolution, hostage-taking, naval battles, sanctions, cyberattacks, assassinations and — in June 2025 — direct American airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. This article is the master timeline; the rest of this series examines each chapter in depth.

1953 — Where It Really Began
The CIA and Britain's MI6 orchestrated the overthrow of Iran's elected prime minister, Mohammad Mosaddegh, after he nationalised Iranian oil. The coup restored the Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, whose US-backed rule lasted until 1979. For many Iranians, this remains the original grievance.
1979–1981 — Revolution and the Hostage Crisis
The Islamic Revolution toppled the Shah and brought Ayatollah Khomeini to power. On 4 November 1979, students seized the US embassy in Tehran, holding 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. Washington severed diplomatic relations in April 1980 — they have never been restored.
1980–1988 — The Iran–Iraq War Draws America In
The US tilted toward Saddam Hussein's Iraq during the eight-year war. The "Tanker War" in the Gulf brought direct US–Iran naval clashes, culminating in Operation Praying Mantis (1988) and the USS Vincennes' downing of Iran Air Flight 655, killing 290 civilians.
1995–2015 — Sanctions and the Nuclear File
US sanctions hardened through the 1990s. After Iran's covert enrichment sites were exposed in 2002, the nuclear program became the central dispute — leading eventually to the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA), which traded strict limits on enrichment for sanctions relief.
2018–2024 — Maximum Pressure and the Shadow War
The US withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018 and imposed "maximum pressure" sanctions. Iran ramped enrichment to 60%. The shadow war escalated: tanker attacks, the 2020 killing of General Qasem Soleimani, Iranian missile retaliation, sabotage at Natanz, and — after October 2023 — direct Iranian missile barrages against Israel in April and October 2024.
June 2025 — The Twelve-Day War
Israel's Operation Rising Lion (13 June 2025) struck Iran's nuclear facilities, air defences and military leadership. On 21–22 June, the United States entered directly: Operation Midnight Hammer sent B-2 bombers with 30,000-lb bunker-buster bombs against Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan — the first open US military strike on Iranian soil. Iran answered with a telegraphed missile strike on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, and a ceasefire took hold on 24 June 2025.
Late 2025 — Snapback
In August 2025 the European powers triggered the JCPOA "snapback," restoring UN sanctions on Iran by the end of September 2025. Diplomacy, deterrence and the risk of renewed strikes now coexist in an uneasy standoff.
